Genesis

"Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can"  - Arthur Ashe

          This piece is titled Genesis because it was the first piece I had cast in bronze and represents a series of beginnings for me.  I first had the opportunity to explore sculpting, thanks to a middle school art teacher who recognized my aptitude and went out of his way to provide materials.  In high school, there were no classes in sculpting so I took jewelry making and metal design.  When I started college I intended to major in art but my passion for horses combined with interest in science lead me to the school of veterinary medicine instead.  After graduation in 1986, I still wanted to try sculpting.  There were no local classes, but I found an artist at Greenville's art museum who introduced me to oil based clay.  Genesis was the product of that connection and my not knowing how to build an armature to support the standing horse I had in mind.  Little did I know, that I would have to start over 20 years later to pursue my sculpting dreams.
