Nemesis
"Art is never finished, only abandoned." - Leonardo da Vinci
Over twenty years ago, I was captivated by photos of horses of the Camarague. Their beauty is one of strength born of the hardships of freedom. The stallions must fight for breeding rights to mares who must forage daily for enough food to produce foals who are strong enough to survive the risks of a harsh environment. Each has its own nemesis to contend with. This piece was born of hardship for me. Finding time to sculpt daily, struggling with getting the conformation correct, trying to create something inspired by decades old images that had stuck in my mind. Some days I worked furiously. Other days, I just wanted to give up. It had become my nemesis. I came across the above quote by da Vinci and realized that, in my mind, this piece would never be finished and it was okay to let it go.
