Addiction

"We admitted we were powerless over alcohol and that our lives had become unmanageable."   -Bill W.

This piece was created around my thoughts concerning addiction in our lives:  shopping, exercise, alcohol, food and now even our cell phones.  The equine equivalent of addiction would be a destructive habit called "cribbing" in which horses will compulsively chew or suck on wood, mostly fences and stall doors.  It is a disease born of the stress of captivity.  This horse is seen trying to rise from a rough wall built of many stones, biting in anger at the frozen lock and key that might free him.  As in the Jewish tradition, small stones placed on top of the wall are reminders of those who have passed away.  The horse's neck, the lock and the wall form a circle that represents the vicious cycle of addiction.
